This Blog is about a journey to all the Ports of Entry of South Africa. It is a journey of about 12,000 kilometres which covers the complete roadmap of South Africa.
I have always been fascinated with geographical land and road maps. Roads and place names that I see on these maps capture my imagination. Then follow dreams and planning until I get to travel there.
Ports of entry have always been part of these dreams. Border post names such as McCarthy's Rest, Platjan, Sani Pas, Zanzibar and many more caught my interest and I simply had to go and visit.
But there is also a down side of border posts. I often get the idea that staff are intentionally trained to appear very blunt and unhelpful. There are no user friendly directions or help available at border posts. Travelers have to find their own way around required forms and where it must be submitted. And when you get in the wrong queue, no one will correct you until you reach the front, only to be redirected to the back of another queue.
Is it really the case at all our border posts ?
After retiring from a fulltime corporate career, I wanted to do something unique, some or other travel adventure that will take more than a month to complete. With initial research it became clear that such a journey has not been undertaken in South Africa yet. The dream became a project.
