Ficksburg Bridge - no cherry blossoms here

The Ficksburg Bridge border post to Lesotho, just 3km outside Ficksburg, counts as one of the busiest in South Africa. Twenty thousand people crossed the border here on 23 December 2012. It also facilitates a lot of commercial traffic going from South Africa to Maputsoe, the name of the border post in Lesotho and also a major town just across the border.

Many South Africans work in factories and industries in Maputsoe and cross the border daily. Tourists to the ski slopes of Lesotho are also regulars during winter months.

But unlike the beautiful area, this is not a good looking border posts. It appears dirty, untidy and chaotic. There are no separate parkings bays for motor cars and the many trucks with their cargo that needs to be cleared by customs create a lot of tension.

Efforts are being  made to create more order on the South African side and a huge taxi rank has just been completed. It includes formal structures for street hawkers.
