Giriyondo - tense and controversial ?

Giriyondo is the second of two border posts that provides access between South Africa and Mozambique via the Kruger National Park. You can read more about Pafuri, the other one, in a previous post on this blog.

The border post is situated 95 km east of Phalaborwa, about 45 km north-east from the Letaba rest camp. The last 28 km leading to the border post is a gravel road, in good condition, as expected from any Kruger National Park road.

The border post was opened in 2005 and the buildings are modern and well kept. The buildings of the Mozambique border post are back-to-back with those of the South African side. It is close to be a 'one-stop-shop' similar to Twee-Rivieren in Kgalagadi, with immigration, police and wild life offices on both sides in the same building.

The border post is used only by tourists and locals. The Massingir dam in the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier park is 75 km from the border post on the Mozambique side. Since December 2011 travellers entering South Africa at this border post need to provide proof of accommodation reservation for at least one night in the Kruger National Park. Permanent residents of the Massingir district are exempt if they can provide proof of residency. This leads to abuse, and as in the case of Pafuri, can lead to the Kruger National Park being used as an access road.

Giriyondo border post is situated in an area which became a hotspot for rhino poaching in the Kruger National Park. This was clear, judged by the attitude and sense of thoroughness displayed by all the officials at the borderpost.
