Kosi Bay - adventure tourists to Mozambique

It is not clear whether Kosi Bay refers to a town or an area. The name of this north-eastern border post is definitely Kosi Bay on the South African side, and Farazela, a mobile asbestos office, only meters away, on the Mozambique side.

There are many small towns and villages on the R22 leading to the border post, the last being eMangusi 15 km before the border. The road passes through the centre of these towns. The streets are lined with businesses and hawkers and the going is slow. There are also numerous schools along the way and very efficient speed bumps will slow you down to 40 km/hour or less.

The border post is used mainly by South African tourists with 4x4 vehicles and fishing boats going to Mozambique. Ponta do Ouro is 10 km away on a sandy gravel road. Locals and migrant workers from Mozambique are the other group of people crossing here. No commercial traffic can be accommodated.

The border post is relatively quiet but traffic picks up over weekends and holidays. It is open from 8:00 to 17:00.

Kosi Bay was the last of the four border posts to Mozambique that we visited.
